Both Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a built-in security feature-Controlled Folder Access-a part of Microsoft Defender and can help prevent unauthorized apps from changing files in protected folders.
Windows ransomware protection monitors apps attempting to modify files inside protected folders. If an unknown or suspicious app tries to change your files, Windows blocks the action automatically, adding an extra layer of security against ransomware and other malicious software. In this guide, we will walk you through the simple steps to enable ransomware protection on Windows and configure it properly.
Type and search for Windows Security in the Start menu, and click to open it from the result.

On the window that pops up, select the Virus & threat protection tab from the right navigation section.

Then scroll down to the bottom Ransomware protection section, and click Manage ransomware protection under it.

Toggle the switch for Controlled folder access to On.
Please Note: Controlled folder access requires turning on Real-time protection. So ensure you have already turned on the Real-time protection.

After enabling this ransomware protection, Windows will automatically protect important folders from suspicious apps, and the risk of malware encrypting your personal files will be significantly reduced. This feature provides strong protection when combined with regular backups and safe browsing habits.
