When a Windows update triggers the BitLocker recovery screen that pops up during the boot-up process, it usually looks like something is seriously wrong—but in most cases, it is a security-triggered verification issue, not data loss or encryption failure.
BitLocker is doing exactly what it is designed to do: it uses the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to verify that your system has not been tampered with. If system integrity appears to have changed, BitLocker may lock your drive to protect your data, and require a recovery key to unlock it.
As a result, with updates like KB5089549, changes to Secure Boot, TPM measurements, or boot files can temporarily break BitLocker’s trust chain. If your PC suddenly started showing the BitLocker recovery screen after every startup, and the issue began right after a Windows update, KB5089549 may be the trigger. This guide walks through how to uninstall the problematic update to restore normal boot behavior.
Before fixing anything, you must get into Windows by entering your BitLocker recovery key and allow Windows to boot.

NOTE: If you cannot reach the desktop and have to get stuck at the recovery screen, please move to Step 3 directly.

After removing the problematic Windows update, restart your computer to see if the issue has been fixed.
The BitLocker recovery screen after startup is usually triggered by low-level security changes during updates. Uninstalling problematic update effectively restores the previous trusted state, allowing your system to boot normally again. Once your firmware and TPM environment are stable, you can safely update Windows without triggering the issue again.
