How to Check Modern EUFI in Windows 11

Aug 20, 2025

Modern Windows PCs no longer rely on the traditional BIOS firmware. Instead, they use UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface), which is a faster, more secure, and more feature-rich replacement. Many Windows 11 features, such as Secure Boot and BitLocker, require UEFI.

Stay with us to check if your PC uses modern UEFI firmware or the older Legacy BIOS in Windows 11.

Method 1. Check via System Information

Step 1. Open Run Dialog

Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog.

Step 2. Open System Information

Type msinfo32 and press Enter.

Step 3. Check BIOS Mode

In the System Summary window, find the BIOS Mode entry:

  • UEFI: Your system is using modern UEFI.
  • Legacy: Your system is using the older BIOS mode.

Method 2. Check Disk Partition Style

Step 1. Open Disk Management

Right-click the Start button and choose Disk Management.

Step 2. Open Disk Properties

Right-click Disk 0 and select Properties.

Step 3. Check Partition Style

Go to the Volumes tab, and look for Partition style. UEFI systems typically use GPT (GUID Partition Table) instead of MBR (Master Boot Record).

  • GUID Partition Table (GPT): UEFI
  • Master Boot Record (MBR): Legacy BIOS

In Short

Checking your firmware mode in Windows 11 is quick, and ensures you are making the most of your system’s capabilities. If you discover your PC is still on Legacy BIOS and supports UEFI, you may consider converting your system disk from MBR to GPT and switching to UEFI mode, but back up your data first.
