How to Disable Restart after Updating on Windows 11

Apr 28, 2026

Windows updates are essential for security, stability, and performance, but automatic restarts can be disruptive—especially if they happen while you're working or leave you returning to a rebooted PC unexpectedly. Fortunately, Windows 11 allows you to prevent or control automatic restarts after updates. Here we will walk you through how to disable restart after Windows Update.

Step 1. Turn Off Restart Notification

Turning off this option prevents Windows from rebooting automatically at the earliest opportunity.

  • Press Win + I to open Windows Settings.
  • In the left navigation bar, click Windows Update.
  • Then select Advanced options in the right pane.
  • Turn off Notify me when a restart is required to finish updating.

Step 2. Disable Auto Reboot

This tells Windows not to auto-restart while a user is logged in.

  • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog box, and enter regedit in it to open the Registry Editor.
  • Navigate to the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU

  • If the WindowUpdate or AU keys are not there, create them first by right-clicking the upper key and selecting New > Key.
  • Then right-click in the right pane of the AU key, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value to create a new value.
  • Name the value NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers.
  • Double-click the value and set its data to 1.
  • Click on OK to close the Registry Editor.

Conclusion

Disabling automatic restarts after Windows updates can help prevent interruptions and protect unsaved work.
